The Nuns way of life

Daily life in the monastery emphasises quite, seclusion, meditation practice and the study of the Buddha’s teachings. The daily routine at Dhammasara is designed to create an atmosphere of peace and harmony, conducive to meditation practice. At times there is an emphasis on group practice. At other times the focus shifts to solitary practice.

The following outline of the daily routine is for a time when group practice is the emphasis.

The daily routine

5:00 am – 6:30 am

Group sitting with chanting

6:45 am – 7:45 am

Breakfast followed by Sutta study

7:45 am – 9:15 am

Work

9:15 am – 9:30 am

Drink and clean up

9:30 am – 10:30 am

Group sitting

10:30 am – 12 noon

Food offering – including chanting, a dharma talk and blessing, given by Ajan Vayama and the monastic community

12 pm – 2 pm

Clean up / rest

2 pm – 3 pm

Individual practice

3 pm – 5 pm

Vinaya class, alternating with individual practice, or work around the monastery as required

5 pm – 6:30 pm

Evening drink / showers

7:30 pm – 9 pm

Group sitting with chanting and a Dhamma talk on some nights

9 pm – 5 am

Rest or continued practice
